Move To Amend

Move to Amend
To The Congregation:

We will consider adopting this Move to Amend resolution (see below) for ourselves at the upcoming annual meeting. Move to Amend is an organization dedicated to overturning the Supreme Court decision on Citizens United. This decision, as you are most likely aware, is a decision that puts speech up for sale by declaring that the spending of money on speech is, itself, speech.

This is a question of conscience and we, as a community, should seek to explore this question. Some of us may explore inwardly but there are others who seek to explore outwardly; community is found in each in a shared, common space for both.

Whatever your preference, please try to decide whether you would support our organization’s name being associated with this movement. Seventeen UU churches have approved of this resolution.

Move to Amend Resolution

RESOLVED: the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Lakeland, Florida stands with the Move to Amend campaign and communities across the country to defend democracy from the corrupting effects of undue corporate power by amending the United States Constitution to establish that:

1. Only human beings, not corporations, are endowed with constitutional rights, and
2. Money is not speech, and therefore regulating political contributions and spending is not equivalent to limiting political speech.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Congregation of Lakeland, Florida hereby joins with other organizations statewide to instruct our state and federal representatives to enact resolutions and legislation to advance this effort.
